August’s Musical Bonanza

And so, our musical bonanza has begun, with two hugely successful recitals on Sunday 4th August and Monday 5th. On Sunday, violinist Cathy Mathews and concert pianist, Valentina Seferinova, brought us a fabulous programme of music, impressively played and – unbelievably – after only two rehearsals together, as Valentina had to step in to cover for Eunice Pike who dropped out owing to illness only a few days before. My adjective of the day to describe the music was ‘heavenly’ though ‘simply heavenly’ and ‘utterly charming’ also found their way into my notes. It has to be said that when Cathy played her violin solo of ‘Meditation for Thaïs’ by Massenet, the audience was clearly in a state of serenity. The final duet by Beethoven: Sonata in F major (Spring) conveyed both the botanical complexities and sheer joy of the season. We very much hope they will return in the near future.

This was followed on Monday by David Price, who joined us on his Summer British Recital Tour, for which we are extremely grateful. David brought us a delightful programme from across the world and across the centuries, full of interesting contrasts and complexities, not least in the final piece by Marcel Duprés, which David described as hellishly difficult but deliciously exciting to listen to – and he was right. We are immensely grateful to David for returning to Holy Trinity each year and we very much look forward to seeing him again on 21st July next year.
